The work involves responsibility for the performance of clerical tasks of a routine nature requiring no prior knowledge of library techniques. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures with detailed instructions given for new assignments. Supervision is received from professional staff and/or higher clerical personnel. Does related work as required. 

A Circulation Clerk performs circulation duties, and helps keep the library in order. 

Summary of Duties 

  • Maintain a Friendly and Welcoming environment; Greet patrons 
  • Circulation activities: Checking Items out to Patrons; Discharging items 
  • Inspection of returned items for damage 
  • Notify patrons of  and collect money for: overdue fines, miscellaneous fees, and/or lost or damaged items 
  • Review applications for library cards, create new borrower records, and issue replacement card, file registration cards 
  • Accurate Data Entry 
  • Answer the telephone and assist patron personally or direct caller to appropriate department 
  • Locate Library materials for loan 
  • Sort book carts according to spine labels; shelve materials according to spine labels 
  •  Give directional information 
  • Provide information to the public on library policies and procedures 
  • Call patrons to deliver messages and respond to inquiry 
  • Communicate with supervisor and staff on both library computer channels and verbally 
  • Provide reference and readers advisory when needed 
  • Promote library programs and activities 
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings 
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment 
  • Adheres to schedule and attendance requirements 
  • Empty book drops and routinely check for items 
  • Familiar with opening and closing procedures 
  • Performs pull list as shift requires 
  • Unpack and process delivery 

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Library Director 

Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours 

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:  Good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; working knowledge of library filing and shelving procedures; working knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to operate keyboard; ability to get along well with others; ability to write legibly; clerical aptitude; tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

Minimum Qualifications:  

Required: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Strong customer service skills 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 

Preferred: 

  • Associate’s Degree or bachelor’s Degree 
  • Experience with Library software, such as automated circulation systems 

Part-time; no more than 20 hours per week
