Position Title:            Head of Adult Information Services

Classification:           FLSA exempt, 35 hrs. /week

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible for professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing, and managing a comprehensive program of service for the Adult Reference Department. Stays updated on Reference related matters. Trains and supervises department personnel, including technical services clerk, reviews their work, and assesses effectiveness. Conducts regular meetings with staff to discuss services, issues and new ideas. Motivates and encourages personnel.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS    

The Head of Adult Information Services provides leadership to develop and implement library reference and outreach services, library instructions, collection development and other library initiatives.

  • Arranges for purchases and coordinates acceptance, cataloging, and classification of all reference books and materials with Technical Services Clerk.
  • Assists with responsibilities related to technology functions and equipment.
  • Attends professional meetings and workshops.
  • Builds collection of books, periodicals, research instruments, and audio-visual materials through independent selection and consultation with staff members.
  • Collects and tracks monthly statistics on Reference use.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of library staff.
  • Establishes task priorities within Reference Department.
  • Examines professional publications and other sources for selection of books, periodicals, and related materials.
  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures for patrons and resolves patron complaints.
  • Interviews applicants for employment as Reference library staff.
  • Oversees Book-a-Librarian program, research assistance and career support.
  • Oversees ILL/SEAL programs.
  • Participates in civic organizations and community activities.
  • Participates in library special projects as required or necessary.
  • Participates in library teams, committees, and trainings.
  • Participates in long-range planning.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of programs for adults on a variety of topics, including instructional programming and technology training, both in the library and in the community
  • Plans programs that highlight Reference collections, develops program handouts, and conducts effective classes.
  • Prepares brochures, flyers, and other public relations materials to promote library resources and services.
  • Prepares regular and narrative reports for the Library Director, and the Library Board of Trustees.
  • Provides a full range of information services to the public, including reference and media advisory.
  • Responsible for selection of materials and collection development for Hoopla, Overdrive Advantage and Reference collections. Tracks expenditures and weeds collection.
  • Recommends guidelines and procedures for the improvement of reference services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MLS from an ALA accredited library school
  • NY Public Librarian Certification
  • Access to a reliable means of transportation
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions in the English language
  • Proficiency with computers, tablets, Smartphones, and other digital devices
  • Agree to submit to a background check and have results that meet the expectations of the employer

PHYSICAL SKILLS    

  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials up to fifty (50) pounds; push loaded book trucks up to one hundred (100) pounds
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment (copier, fax, scanner, m/film, etc.)

Full-time, 35 Hours per week

Salary: $75,400

Typical Schedule:  Monday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

                              Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m.

                              Wednesday, 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

                              Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

                              Friday, 9:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.

                              Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (1 per month w/Friday off)

Suffern Free Library Service Hours

Monday – Thursday, 9:30a.m. – 8:00p.m.

Friday – Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Sunday – 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
