Department: Children’s and Young Adult Services
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Definition:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, supervises the successful
operation of the Children’s and Young Adult Departments. Responsible for collection
development and programming.
Position Duties
- Responsible for recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of Children’s and
Young Adult department staff. - Assign duties, schedules, etc. to staff.
- Develops the collection by researching, selecting, ordering, and determining the
location of items (books, audio tapes, periodicals, etc.) for the Children’s and
Young Adult reference, fiction and non-fiction collections. - Oversee the maintenance of existing collection by shelving, weeding, generating
signage and promotion of new materials. - Plans, develops, and conducts new programming for children and young adults
throughout the year and maintains established programs. - Provides reader’s advisory.
- Provides a Reading Program during summer months to include use of a theme
via decorations and activities, scheduling of reading appointments, scheduling
and providing entertainment. - Generates promotional materials in conjunction with the Head of Marketing, i.e.,
brochures, flyers, and press releases to advertise programming and other
activities. - Writes monthly Children’s Department report to the Director.
- Purchases and oversees the assembly of furniture, equipment and fixtures for the
Children’s and Young Adult Departments. - Purchases supplies and prizes for programming and general use.
- Represents the Library through Outreach Programming such as school visits and
promotional visits to local stores. - Represents the Library at community events that involve children. May be called
upon to do public speaking, run programs. - Represent the Library at user’s group meetings for children and young adults.
- Attends in service and training sessions, as required.
- Participates in library-wide planning and decision-making as a member of the
library management team to improve the quality of library services. - Attends staff meetings. Responsible for informing staff of children’s issues and
information. - Oversees and works at Children’s Help desk.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in library science from a program accredited by the American
Library Association - minimum of three (3) years’ library experience working with youth.
- minimum of one (1) year in a supervisory or administrative role
- must enjoy working with children of all ages.
- must be computer literate and able to use the software programs that the library
currently possesses.
Physical
Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs, stand for at least 1 hour, have a driver’s
license and vehicle.
Schedule
Full time – 35 hours/week, includes night and Saturday rotation.
Salary & Benefits
The salary for this position is $68,000, plus full benefits, 401K match, paid vacation,
person time and sick time.
