The Goshen Public Library & Historical Society seeks to hire an Interim Director.

The Interim Director of the Goshen Public Library & Historical Society (GPLHS) is a 3 to 6-month position to oversee the library while the Board of Trustees conducts a thorough search for a permanent Director. The Interim Director will manage GPLHS operations to ensure quality service to the community, and will oversee the GPLHS staff, facilities, and annual budget.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage all personnel, including Department Heads, all full-time and part-time staff in a New York Civil Service and union environment, including hiring, motivating, counseling, performance issues, employee relations, and separations
  • Maintain and manage the GPLHS, including the library building and grounds with attention to the newly planted pollinator garden
  • Manage the annual budget to ensure that a fiscally prudent method of expenditures exists
  • Participate in all staff committees (Collections, Programming, Admin, Dept. Heads and Training) and work to ensure that staff training and professional development are available to all staff members
  • Maintain existing community partnerships including with Orange & Rockland Utilities, Cornerstone Theater Arts, Goshen Arts League, Goshen Food Pantry, and local service organizations.
  • Work with other Library Directors in Orange County and the entire Ramapo Catskill Library System to collaborate on programming, collection, and technology initiatives
  • Ensure the delivery, continuity, and advertisement of programs that meet the needs of the greater Goshen community
  • Provide GPLHS legal counsel with requested information
  • Prepare monthly Board reports for the monthly Board meeting
  • Attend all Board meetings and Board Committee meetings
  • Ensure excellent communication to the staff
  • All other duties as assigned by the Board
  • Keep Board apprised of unexpected developments
  • Inform the Board of any weekday change in schedule or of unexpected schedule changes.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:  Master’s degree (MLS) from an ALA-accredited Library Science program

EXPERIENCE:  

  • A minimum of four (4) years professional library experience in positions with progressive levels of responsibility
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in an executive or senior management position
  • Prior Library Director experience
  • Experience in a Union or Civil Service environment preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Good leadership and communication skills, ability to motivate staff
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems, software applications and technology
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of public library administration including the legal, safety and regulatory environment
  • Experience administering an operating budget utilizing an electronic financial system
  • Knowledge of human resource administration including contract and collective bargaining negotiations, salary administration, interviewing, hiring, performance evaluations, and discipline
  • Excellent and friendly customer service
  • Experience in decision making
  • Excellent personal computer and technology skills
  • Ability to provide team leadership
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral

The position offers flexibility in determining the start and end times depending on how they can best serve the library and supervise its employees. The Interim Director may schedule workdays during the week or weekend, with a day equaling 7 hours. The salary will range from $100 to $150/hour depending on experience.
