The Goshen Public Library & Historical Society, Goshen, NY, seeks an interim head of youth services to manage and advance the Youth Services Department during a period of growth and transition.


Under general direction from the Director, is responsible for the organization, planning, and operation of the Youth Services department during a transition period. Selected candidate will have experience managing and leading and undertake the following:

· Plan and direct daily activities and workflows within department

· Train, manage, and schedule team of 5 direct reports

· Plan and oversee department activities and services including reference, collection development, programming, reader’s advisory, and outreach

· Collect and report statistics/feedback, prepare monthly department report to Board

· Responsible for advance planning of Library’s Summer Reading Program

· Serve as a member of the Library Leadership Team

· Use Baker & Taylor, Amazon, and other book vendors to select and purchase quality, relevant materials for children and teens

· Other duties, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

· Knowledge of literature and programming for children

· Knowledgeable and comfortable with current technologies and digital resources

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

· Well-organized and able to effectively juggle multiple priorities

· Excellent written/oral communication skills and able to work effectively with others

· Presents professional image

· Solid presentation and public speaking skills


· MLIS from ALA-accredited program or MPA or MA/BA in related field; will consider candidates pursuing MLIS degree or those with a minimum of 4 years’ experience in management

· Experience with reference services, collection development, programming, reader’s advisory, outreach, user instruction, and customer service

· Minimum of three years’ experience coaching, mentoring, and leading a team

· Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual skills a plus

Physical Requirements

· Able to see, hear, comprehend, and respond to others verbally and in writing

· Able to manipulate a computer, keyboard, mouse, and perform repetitive hand motions for extended periods of time

· Able to push a book cart and lift items up to 40 lbs.

· Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods of time
