General Summary
The Substitute Librarian is an entry level professional position with the Pearl River Public Library.
This is a substitute position and is scheduled as needed for coverage; ideally also covering one
weekend per month. Librarians in this position provide high quality customer services to the library’s
diverse clientele. Duties may include a wide variety of potential assignments serving adults, teens,
and children. Assignments include public services (reference, reader’s advisory, technology
assistance, and collection development).
Essential Functions

● Provide excellent customer service to customers of all ages.
● Communicate effectively with customers, staff, and administration.
● Promote library activities to the public.
● Perform related work as required and assigned.

Typical Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic library principles, trends, functions, and procedures and
knowledge and understanding of issues and requirements of the specific library program assigned.
SKILL: Excellent customer service skills; management skills including project management skills.
Skill in using technology and aiding users.
ABILITY: Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner;
communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; work with diverse groups of customers and
volunteers of all ages; create and maintain positive staff relationships; lead effectively by example,
inspire staff, and promote enthusiastic teamwork; demonstrate positive attitude, excellent
interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers,
and the community; multi-task and set priorities; demonstrate innovation and flexibility; work varying
shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualification: Possession of a graduate library degree from a library school located
within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department, or from a library
school program which is accredited by the American Library Association; and Possession of a
valid New York State Librarian’s Professional Certificate.
