The Putnam Valley Library, an association library serving a semi-rural community of 12,000 individuals in the lower Hudson Valley of New York, seeks an enthusiastic and creative full-time Children’s Librarian.
Essential Responsibilities:
· Plan and implement programs for children and teens that support the library’s long-term plan.
· Provide excellent customer service to children and families.
· Provide readers’ advisory to children and teens.
· Oversee the youth services floor workflow in collaboration with the youth coordinator.
· Train and provide guidance as needed to library clerks assigned to the youth floor.
· Assist with collection development.
· Collect and maintain statistics.
· Create and distribute marketing material for children and teen programs.
· Update and maintain the youth program calendar for the website.
· Oversee and develop a summer reading program in collaboration with the youth coordinator.
· Contribute to the library’s social media presence.
· Develop an active youth and teen volunteer program.
· Contribute to print and/or newsletters as needed.
· Account for the youth programs budget in collaboration with the youth services coordinator.
· Outreach and collaborate with local organizations and local schools.
· Seek grant opportunities.
· Assist with circulation duties as needed.
Essential Traits:
· Experience working with children and teens.
· Commitment to outstanding public service for children and teenage populations.
· Proficient in current and emerging technologies.
· Ability to organize and self-direct work responsibly.
· Ability to work cooperatively with all staff at every level.
· Prefer a Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university program.
· Or a Bachelor’s Degree and experience working with children and/or libraries.
· Eligibility for a New York State public librarian’s professional certificate at the time of application (or upon graduation).
· Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
· Fluency in the Spanish language preferred.
Minimal Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library Science or library experience or Teaching background. We are willing to train the right person and encourage current MLIS students to apply. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and Saturdays.
Salary: Range between $37,000-47,000 based on experience and MLS/MLIS Status.
